WASHINGTON, DC - Henna Mahmood, a student at the Academy of American Studies in Long Island City, is spending this semester in the halls of the United States Capitol. Nominated by Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D-Manhattan, Queens) Henna joined 100 other high school juniors from across the country on January 30, 2006, to work as a Congressional page. The highly selective Congressional page program rewards high school juniors in high academic standing with the opportunity to serve as a messenger on Capitol Hill for up to 6 months.

WASHINGTON, DC - As the rate of melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer, grows in the United States, Members of Congress are pushing for full public awareness of the risks associated with indoor tanning. Reps. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) and Ginny Brown-Waite (R-FL) today introduced the Tanning Accountability and Notification (TAN) Act (H.R. 4767), which would require Food and Drug Administration to determine whether the current labeling of indoor tanning beds provides sufficient information about the risks associated with indoor tanning.

Carolyn Maloney (NY-14), a leader in Congress for overseas Americans’ voting rights, is applauding new efforts to make voter registration easier for military and non-military Americans overseas. Today, the Overseas Vote Foundation unveiled a vital, brand-new internet resource, which simplifies the voter registration and absentee ballot process (link available at http://www.overseasvotefoundation.org). Potentially millions of American citizens living overseas are disenfranchised every election cycle because they have to wade through a tangled bureaucratic mess of local, state and federal forms and regulations to register to vote or apply for an absentee ballot.

Marvin Bethea, a paramedic who was buried when responding to the 9/11 attacks and has since suffered serious health effects, will sit in the visitors gallery as the guest of Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) when President Bush addresses Congress and the nation. He will be there to represent the thousands of sick and injured 9/11 responders.

Maloney (D-Queens, Manhattan) discussed upcoming improvements to Queens's transportation infrastructure at a town hall meeting at the HANAC Senior Center, highlighting three projects that will benefit her constituents: East Side Access, the Queens Plaza Roadway Rebuilding Project and the Queens Seawall. She was joined by Assemblywoman Cathy Nolan and Councilman Eric Gioia who expressed the need for continued investment in Queens infrastructure. Joseph Petrocelli and Audrey Heffernan of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority made a Powerpoint presentation on East Side Access. Penny Lee of the New York City Department of City Planning discussed the Queens Plaza Roadway Rebuilding Project. Jennifer Kao of the New York City Parks Department made a presentation on the Queens Gateway Park .
