WASHINGTON, DC – The Department of Homeland Security finally announced the distribution of FY06 grants for local first responders today, and shockingly, New York City will take a cut of $83 million and New York state will take a cut of $114.67 million. Despite promises from Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff earlier this year that his department would be distributing money based on risk, the state most at risk for terrorist attacks will receive a cut of about 40% compared to last year.

WASHINGTON, DC – A Census Bureau news release last week touted a survey that the Bush administration has targeted for elimination as “invaluable” (click here for release – text below). The Survey for Income and Program Participation has tracked income, employment and government programs for more than 20 years, but the Bush FY07 budget would terminate the survey.

WASHINGTON, DC – The elimination of a key Census Bureau survey, as proposed by the Bush administration, would prevent the production of important studies on income and health insurance. One such eye-opening study was released Wednesday by The Commonwealth Fund, revealing that young adults are the fastest growing uninsured population in the United States. Utilizing existing data, the researchers were able to analyze the age of the uninsured, as well as the length of time they go without health insurance.

NEW YORK, NY – On Sunday, Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-Brooklyn & Queens) and Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-Manhattan & Queens) joined forces with the New York City Parks Commissioner to call for increased federal funding to eradicate the Asian Longhorned Beetle (ALB).  In recent years, federal ALB funding has fallen sharply in New York while Chicago has eliminated the vicious pest due to aggressive federal investment, according to a report released by Reps. Weiner and Maloney.

Washington, DC – May 19, 2006 – New York City Members of Congress introduced a bill yesterday requesting that the National Park Service study how the site of the General Slocum disaster could fit into the national park system. The site encompasses both the shoreline at Oak Point in the South Bronx and North Brother Island in the East River and would memorialize the 1000+ victims of the General Slocum steamship disaster in 1904. The legislation was authored by Rep. José E. Serrano (D-NY).

WASHINGTON, DC – At a time when oil and gas values are up and oil and gas companies are making record profits, Congress took action today that will help states and tribes ensure that royalties owed on resources taken from their lands are paid in full. Reps. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) and George Miller (D-CA) successfully amended the Interior Appropriations bill (H.R. 5386) to increase by  $1 million the funds available for states and tribes to conduct auditing. Data has shown that for every $1 dollar spent auditing the royalties program, $5 in money that is owed to governments or tribes is returned to them.

WASHINGTON, DC – Today on Capitol Hill, leaders from the political community, the medical community and the fashion industry joined together to renew their call for a better warning about the severe health risks of tanning beds. Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), Dr. Marta Van Beek of the American Academy of Dermatology, and Kate White, editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan magazine, spoke out in support of the TAN Act (H.R. 4767), which was introduced earlier this year by Maloney and Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite (R-FL) and would direct the Food and Drug Administration to re-examine the warning label on tanning beds in order to effectively communicate the risk of skin cancer. Emily Konesky, a 19-year-old skin cancer victim from Buffalo who frequently used tanning beds, joined them to talk about the severe consequences of tanning bed use.
