Rep. Maloney Marks 37th Anniversary of Illegal Turkish Invasion of Cyprus

Washington, D.C. – Rep. Carolyn Maloney commemorated the 37th anniversary of the illegal Turkish invasion of Cyprus at a breakfast reception this morning in the U.S. Capitol with lawmakers and Hellenic leaders.  Today’s event was organized by the American Hellenic Institute in cooperation with the Congressional Hellenic Caucus, of which Maloney is a co-founder and co-chair.  The Turkish invasion of Cyprus began on July 20, 1974.

Rep. Maloney's statement on naval base explosion in Cyprus

NEW YORK, NY – After the devastating fatal explosion at a naval base in Cyprus, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D-Queens & Manhattan), the co-founder and Co-Chair of the Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Issues, released the following statement:

“My heart goes out to the people of Cyprus after the devastating explosion at a Cypriot naval  base near Limassol that took the lives of several people and injured many more.  The fiery blast, which news reports indicate was felt 30 miles away, has apparently taken a terrible toll not only on the naval base and a nearby power station, but also on Cypriot villages located near the site of the explosion.  All the Cypriot people are in my thoughts and prayers at this terrible time.

“When tragedy strikes around the world, Americans have a proud tradition of generously supporting those in need. I encourage New Yorkers seeking to assist the Cypriot people to support relief efforts to help ease the suffering of Cyprus in the wake of this calamity.”

Maloney statement on June jobs report

WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) issued the following statement upon release of the June jobs report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
“The numbers show the barest possible job growth in the month of June. There’s no way to sugar-coat it-- it will clearly take more work to fully restore the economy.

“Yet since Republicans regained the House majority, they haven’t offered a plan to create jobs—let alone pass a single direct job-creation bill. They seem far more focused on delaying financial reforms meant to prevent another crisis, preserving corporate tax breaks and ending Medicare as we know it while protecting the highest-income Americans from paying their fair share. It’s a recipe that should give middle class Americans pause.”

Reps. Maloney, Nadler & King Celebrate As Zadroga 9/11 Health Law Goes Into Effect Today

New York, NY – Today, the health programs provided by the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act went into effect – a milestone celebrated by the bill’s authors, U.S. Reps. Carolyn Maloney, Jerrold Nadler, and Peter King.  Earlier today, Maloney and Nadler attended a ribbon-cutting at Mt. Sinai Medical Center, the site of one of seven Centers of Excellence in the New York City area created under the law.

Rep. Maloney Addresses Queens Seniors on Medicare’s 45th Anniversary, Efforts to Save Program from GOP Assault

Queens, NY – Today, on the 45th anniversary of the beginning of the Medicare program, U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-Queens, Manhattan) spoke to seniors at the HANAC Senior Center in Astoria about her efforts to fight plans put forward by the Republican House majority to end Medicare as we know it.  President Lyndon Johnson signed Medicare into law on July 30, 1965 -- and on July 1, 1966, enrollees first entered the program.

On April 15th of this year, House Republicans passed a budget by a vote of 235 to 193 that would end Medicare as we know it – instead giving seniors an increasingly inadequate subsidy to buy private insurance.

Statement Of Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney On Roosevelt Island’s Self-Governance and Service on the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation Board of Directors

New York, NY - I am greatly dismayed by the Governor’s recent actions regarding the composition of the Board of Directors of the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC).  By removing from the RIOC Board a Roosevelt Island resident chosen in a fair and impartial manner by other Roosevelt Islanders and replacing him with an unelected non-Islander, the Governor has performed a great disservice to the thousands of New Yorkers who live on Roosevelt Island.  

Durbin, Maloney Introduce Family And Medical Leave Inclusion Act

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – Assistant Senate Majority Leader Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Representative Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) introduced the Family and Medical Leave Inclusion Act today, which will allow employees to take unpaid leave to care for a same-sex spouse or partner, parent-in-law, adult child, sibling, grandchild or grandparent.

“Regardless of the make-up of one’s family, all employees should be given the same rights to care for a sick loved one in a time of need,” Durbin said. “For 20 years, we have had a law that provides unpaid leave for families in crisis. As families change, so should the laws designed to help them.”
