WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) issued the following statement after the defeat of the Blunt Amendment in the Senate:

“The Blunt Amendment, when added to other legislation offered at the federal and local level, constitute a war on women’s health. To open the door to vague ‘moral’ objections to offering treatments would have clearly curtailed access to contraception.

“I’m glad that the Senate tabled the amendment, but let’s state it as plainly: if the ratio of women serving in the U.S. Senate reflected their population, this amendment would never have even been brought to the floor. Once again we have an overwhelmingly male institution attempting to dominate women’s health decision making, and it’s just wrong.”
