WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) issued the following statement in response to Con Ed’s contract situation with its union:

“Con Ed is taking extreme measures against 8500 working men and women despite their willingness to continue on the job past contract expiration. Instead of working out their differences at the bargaining table, Con Ed decided to lock out the workers, cancel their health care coverage and threaten their pensions. Utility services to millions of New Yorkers are inadequately staffed at the height of summer demand. I hope Con Ed will choose instead to consider the needs of its customers and will sit down with union leaders for discussions that can lead to a mutually acceptable agreement.”
