Rep. Maloney hails Robert Groves upon his departure from Census Bureau
WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY), former ranking member of the Census Subcommittee, today applauded Census Bureau Director Robert M. Groves after he announced his departure from the Bureau to become Provost of Georgetown University.
“Robert Groves’ statistical background perfectly matched the needs facing the Census Bureau when he arrived there in 2009, on the brink of the vital decennial survey, which is truly the foundation of our democracy. He succeeded beyond all expectation, winning over Democrats and Republicans in Congress, and ably leading the Bureau through the constitutionally mandated count.
“Now his academic background has earned him a new challenge, as Provost of Georgetown University. He is widely published, has won dozens of research grants, and managed large organizations. While I know both Congress and the Bureau will miss him, government’s loss is Georgetown’s gain.
“I hope and expect the Obama Administration to nominate a new Director quickly to work with Mr. Groves over the next few months for a smooth transition and continue the planning needed to build a strong foundation for the 2020 Census.”
