WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) today released the following statement in reaction to the Supreme Court’s 5-4 ruling that legalizes same sex marriage nationwide:

“Today America reached another milestone in the great march toward our nation’s promise of equality for all.  The court has ruled that states may no longer discriminate against same sex couples by denying marriage licenses.  It means that loving couples for generations will be granted the equal protection they deserve as an American birthright.

“Ten years ago, few believed this day would come. But it has, and not because of the leadership of politicians, although many helped along the way. It happened because the LGBT community demanded equality. They put their blood, sweat and tears into the fight. They educated an entire nation about the harmful discrimination they faced.  And they won a hard fought battle. Their victory is shared by all Americans.

“Today we are a better country. Love has prevailed.”
