Rep. Maloney on Syria Airstrike
“Bashar al-Assad and his regime are responsible for one of the greatest humanitarian disasters the world has ever seen, for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people and the displacement of millions. His use of chemical weapons against his own people is absolutely horrific and the recent attack makes clear his moral depravity. The entire world should condemn these atrocities.
“While it is important to counteract Syria’s ability to engage in further chemical weapons attacks, as I said in August 2013 when President Obama was considering military action, Congressional authorization must be sought before the U.S. engages in military action against Syria. Congress and the public need to have a greater understanding of the Administration’s plans, goals, and exit strategies for military action in Syria, particularly as the Administration is placing a growing number of our armed forces in harm’s way. Ad hoc military strikes are not a plan of action, and could have severe long-term consequences.
“We must also applaud and thank the brave men and women in our military for their service and sacrifices on our behalf. We owe them a thorough debate and a deliberate plan of action on how our country should respond to the violence in Syria.”
