Congresswoman Maloney Hails $752,000 in Federal Funding for Stein Senior Center’s New Facility
New York, NY – Today, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D-Manhattan, Queens & Brooklyn) joined with administrators, senior citizens and local elected officials at the Stein Senior Center in Manhattan to hail the allocation by the New York City Department for the Aging of $752,000 in federal Community Development Block Grant funding to support the rehabilitation of the Center’s new home, which is located in the Uniformed Firefighters Association’s headquarters building at 204 East 23rd Street in Manhattan. The Center is celebrating its Grand Opening at its new space this evening.
Rep. Maloney Addresses Seniors on Efforts to Fight GOP Plan to End Medicare
New York, NY – U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney today spoke to seniors at the Whittaker Senior Center on the Lower East Side about her efforts to fight plans put forward by the Republican House majority to end Medicare as we know it. On April 15th, House Republicans passed a budget by a vote of 235 to 193 that would end Medicare as we know it – instead giving seniors an increasingly inadequate subsidy to buy private insurance.
Maloney: New Report Shows Social Security is Primary Income Source for Elderly Women
Washington, DC - A new report by the U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee by the U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee, chaired by Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY), finds that Social Security accounts for more than two-thirds of all income for women aged 65 and over and that any efforts to tinker with this program could have a dramatic impact on retired women who count on their Social Security benefits to make ends meet.
Maloney praises prescription drug “Donut Hole” check distribution
New York, NY – Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) today highlighted new data that show that a total of 8,100 seniors in her 14th Congressional District will receive $250 ‘donut hole’ checks in 2010 as part of the new Health Care Reform law signed by President Obama. The checks are meant to begin the process of closing the Medicare prescription drug coverage gap that occurs when annual drug expenditures exceed $2,830 for any recipient of Medicare Part “D” coverage.

Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) today reacted to the Social Security Administration’s announcement today that there will be no cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) to next year’s social security checks. “This announcement is disappointing but not a surprise, given the very low rate of inflation as it is calculated,” Rep. Maloney said. “That’s why I’m gratified that Speaker Pelosi has committed to moving ahead with legislation later this year that will provide Social Security recipients with a one-time $250 payment in 2011.”

House Financial Services Committee votes to pass Maloney bill increasing available funding for a wide range of community development
Today the House Financial Services Committee passed H.R. 6642, the National Consumer Cooperative Bank (NCB) Act Amendments of 2008. Introduced by Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), this bill makes the non-profit subsidiary of the NCB—NCB Capital Impact—eligible to receive funding under the Community Development Banking and Financial Institutions Act of 1994, which is administered by the CDFI Fund.

DelliBovi, President of the Federal Home Loan Bank of New York (FHLBNY) announced that a grant of $600,000 in federal funds would be awarded to HANAC, Inc., to help fund the construction of the 93-unit PCA Senior Residence, a senior housing development on the previous site of the Presbyterian Church of Astoria at 31-30 33rd Street. Joining them at today’s announcement were Evangeline Douris and John P. Kaiteris, HANAC’s Chair and Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer, respectively; Al Gentile, Assistant Vice President, Astoria Federal Savings & Loan Association, which will serve as the depository for the funding on behalf of HANAC; and Reverend Don Olinger of the Presbyterian Church of Astoria.
