Reps. Maloney, Nadler & King statement on study showing 15% increased cancer rates among 9/11 first responders
WASHINGTON, DC – Reps. Carolyn B. Maloney [D-NY], Jerrold Nadler [D-NY] and Peter King [R-NY] issued the following statement after publication today of a study of almost 21,000 first responders by the World Trade Center Health Program which shows a 15 percent increased incidence of thyroid, prostate, blood, lymph and soft tissue cancers among first responders in the first seven years after the 9/11 attacks, when compared to a control group.

The first award decisions were mailed out by the VCF yesterday.

Reps. Maloney, Nadler and King urge exemption from sequester for 9/11 Health Act
WASHINGTON, DC – New York Reps. Carolyn Maloney (D), Jerrold Nadler (D), and Peter King (R) today sent a letter to the leaders of the House and Senate and President Obama asking that the programs created by the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act be exempted from the automatic budget cuts mandated by the 2011 debt-limit bill if no agreement is reached in deficit negotiations between the President and Congress to avert the so-called “fiscal cliff.”

King (R-NY), the House sponsors of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health & Compensation Act, commended the proposal by Dr. John Howard, Director of the National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health and the administrator of the World Trade Center Health Program, that the Program accept the entire set of recommendations issued previously by its Science/Technical Advisory Committee (STAC) to provide coverage for certain types of cancer resulting from exposure to toxins released at Ground Zero. Dr. Howard’s recommendations were issued in documents today, which will be subject to public review and comment for 30 days before being implemented. Zadroga Act Sponsors Request a Meeting with HHS Secretary Sebelius On 9/11 Health Program Coverage of Cancer
In response to this week’s vote by the Science/Technical Advisory Committee, U.S. Reps. Carolyn Maloney, Jerrold Nadler, and Peter King, along with U.S. Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand and Charles Schumer, the prime sponsors of the Act, sent a letter to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius requesting a meeting to discuss the process of how the Department will proceed with a decision on whether to add certain cancers to the list of covered conditions in the World Trade Center Health Program.
